Hello!

First of all, my love and respect go out to the folks at ACE team who created such amazing worlds for me to pummel chimeras in.

I'm going to trade school right now to become a certified welder. I've been learning for about five months and I have about four months ahead of me before I graduate. In the meantime I've been itching to do something more interesting than welding plates together for destructive testing.

While playing through Zeno Clash 2 I stumbled across some of the golem cubes that Word and his folks use. This is a little weird to ask, but...

What are they made of? If you had to guess? The door to Nahuatl-Teh's realm mentions "concrete and copper." The surface of the cubes are a dark brown color to my eyes, with brassy squares on the edges, which appear to be some manner of joinery. Are they wood? Remarkable to me that in the chaotic region of zenozoik they would have survived for so long.

I was thinking about making some of my own out of carbon steel, and etching the letters onto the surface, then filling in the depressions with brass brazing rod and sanding the surface flush with a sanding wheel. I have never inlayed with brass before, but I'll try it soon and let you know how it goes.

Hi Floyd! That sounds awesome. Please do post anything you build here so we can see it.

We actually had someone here at Chile who built a real-scale junk-musket (welding pieces and even using real bones), and we have yet to post a blog post about it... (so busy with Abyss Odyssey).

About the material of the cubes: You got me there, but I would assume some type of metal. Copper exists in great quantities in Chile (where Zenozoik is), but I don't know if copper would make much sense, since it is a softer metal (or am I wrong?)

Let me know if you can't see the image, but it's just an eye of horus etching that I've done. I'll try and do something more zeno clash appropriate, either tonight or tomorrow. But if all else fails, I'll try and fill this eye with brass and inlay it.

Copper is a softer metal, but brass and bronze are much more durable alloys. A mixture of copper and tin. It may be possible that the cubes were made of something durable and coated with copper. Electroplated perhaps?

One of my instructors passed on a copper tube for me to try etching. I can also try melting the copper with a torch and we can see what it might look like inlaid into steel. I'll have to get back to you on plating something. It is on my to-do list.

Looks awesome. I can tell that you know your craft really well. If you document the process we could add it to the blog so everyone can check it out.

Looking forward to more images! smile.gif

Thanks for the compliments!

Here are the first attempts. https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos...217543837_n.jpg

And this one is something zeno clash related! It's a (very crudely made) letter P in golem script. https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos...035899282_n.jpg

I'll keep experimenting, and I'll fill you in on the details as I go.

Looking good! How are you planning on shaping the cube and working the other details? I think someone here should upload a nice render of the 3D model so you have more references. I'll see if I can get someone on it.

Update: And here it is!:

Thanks again!

I've got a few ideas on how to shape the cube...

First approach: I figure out its physical dimensions, plasma cut out six steel squares for the cube faces, TIG weld the edges together to make the cube. To get the look from the game I think I'll dip it into Copper Sulfate (Like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmhD8BmEFIo) And then etch the letter onto each surface.

Second approach: Talk to my CNC machinist friends to cut out the cube faces with joints. Assemble them and braze the edges to get the gold corners that way. Copper sulfate again...and etch strategically.

Thanks for that image! I'll work on it.

Do you have a .SVG file for the golem script? I could use it.

Hmm. We should have it somewhere. Maybe even part of the game files... I'll ask if it's around.

I'll keep trying to create my own from the jpegs on the cryptography page.

I'm meeting up with an artistic and inkscape savvy person tomorrow morning. They might be able to help me convert it.

I also have an idea for a little surprise. Correct me if I'm wrong, but did Edmundo come up with the golem cipher?

My friend made the .SVG file!

Some images and work will be forthcoming.

May I share the .SVG we have made? So other zeno enthusiasts may use them?

Update

I've spent today doing some experiments and making a small thing to honor Edmundo.

Cutting: https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos...863747009_n.jpg

Grinding: https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hpho...109102873_n.jpg

Stencil prep: https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos...723240445_n.jpg

Stencil Cut: https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos...903719792_n.jpg

Stencil Application: https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hpho...278859875_n.jpg

And some experiments with Copper Sulfate...it still needs some refinement but here's how it happened.

What Copper Sulfate crystals looks: https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos...730454202_n.jpg

Copper Sulfate being weighed for solution: https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hpho...737856039_n.jpg

Finished solution! : https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hpho...948849947_n.jpg

Steel Nail before bath: https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos...289470877_n.jpg

Steel Nail after a few seconds: https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos...521249317_n.jpg

I'm going to read up on electroplating, I left a nail in solution for fifteen minutes and it did lay copper on the surface, but it didn't seem to really bond with the material. I may have needed to decontaminate the nail first? More experiments will be needed. Now..I better etch Edmundo's tablet. smile.gif

Spectacular! Floyd, your work is too awesome to go unnoticed! I'll ask someone here to gather all these images you've posted and prepare a Blog post so we can share on other channels (if you approve). I'm sure many Zeno Clash fans would love to see what you've done. And feel free to share the .SVG!

We should definitely present your work next to the Musket replica post we're also expecting to show soon. I'm sure Edmundo will be very honored with what you've done. I'll be sure to point him to the thread when I get in on Monday (he doesn't hang at the forums too much).

It could not have come to pass without the inspiration provided by your beautiful games!

This is not the end for me. I'll keep working on the keycubes. From my experiments so far I've gained invaluable experience and discovered new processes.

Haley Moore helped me convert the images into vectors, I'll ask her to submit the files to thingiverse under her name and share the link here as soon as I can.

If any of the pictures can help promote ACE Team and its games, by all means, they are yours!

Hi Floyd,
I am truly honored! And I love how the steel plate looks!
I don't think there is any object in the world that will hold my name as long as that one... I can imagine someone finding the plate long after I'm gone and wondering in what language it's written.
Its really cool, it made my day smile.gif

I have a TrueType font with the cipher-alphabet somewhere, tomorrow I'll look for it and share it too.
Thanks again!

Just in case someone wants to use it, here is the Golem cipher in font form.
It only uses the CAPS as runes, and I tried to put the runes with letters that correspond with the sounds (for example, E-Elephant), but of course some sounds are in strange letters, like SH-Shadow or Ch-Chain.

http://www.aceteam.cl/materials/fonts/GolemCipher.TTF

I think they came out too thin.. usually when we used this font in the game we would use photoshop to make bolder-thicker versions of the letters.

I'm glad that you like it, Edmundo! smile.gif

I am trying to think of something I can build the plate into...I've been busy these last few days and not around much.

I still have every intention of making the keycubes. I think that will be another thread of pictures when it is finished. Most of what I was doing here was fact finding for cube materials.

I know you are exceedingly busy with Abyss Odyssey right now. But I am considering some interesting uses of the fonts that you provided. (Thank you VERY much by the way!)

I was wondering a little about the number system used by Golem and his Makers. Now, if it's modern hindu-arabic base-10 numbers and that was the style you were intending. That is completely fine!

This is almost a little bit of mathematical fan fiction. But I saw that some of the shadows and drones used by the Golems feature faces of a classical greek style. I was imagining that since your letters have such a striking design, if I attempted to engineer or extrapolate numbers from that design I'd be doing your work a disservice.

Would you mind if I created a system of numbers using your script based on ancient greek numbering that uses letters for numbers? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_numerals)

Yes, of course you can add a numbers system!
We never designed a number system for the Golem's text.
Since the alphabet is phonetic, whenever we needed to write a number we just wrote it in word form ("one" vs "1").
But I can imagine that when Golems wrote text for eachother rather than for early zenos, since they can understand more abstract concepts, it makes sense they would have a number system (much more efficient).
The greek number system also shares with the fictional alphabet that it is acrophonic (just read that in the wikipedia page you sent smile.gif ), so I think its a good fit.

This is fantastic, Floyd! It's great to see someone putting such considerable effort (and talent) into appreciation for one of my very favorite games. Also, thanks to Edmundo for the quick link to the cipher. I better start learning it if I want to be able to read the golem script in Zeno Clash 3, right? wink.gif

Thanks for the compliments!

It's been a little while since I've been on. Life is a little hectic right now. I've been giving thought to the number system and collecting copper scraps to try and either melt or galvanoplasty into keycubes.

Also some more fun with etching into brass. One of my friends is really good with the vinyl cutter and has a silly huge collection of brass lockets. That copper sulfate is really coming into its own.
