Interesting approach commenting on a torrent. wink.gif

They didn't release it on *torrent website* though. Carlos commented on an existing torrent and the uploader added his comment to this torrents nfo.

Chances are, it will cause some of the people who like it to buy it because they appreciate the developer for doing so.

Now we just wait for a reply from Carlos himself to see if it's real wink.gif

Well, if people are going to download it anyway, then you might as well include an appeal to anyone who might be downloading with the intent of buying later, should they be suitably impressed.

I started posting the comment below on torrent sites and some torrent uploaders actually started spreading the message themselves. There's not much more we can do than that. It isn't like I want the game to be on pirate websites and torrents. If you can't stop them... maybe you can at least appeal to their conscience.

This is the comment I spreaded:
----------------

I'm one of the developers of Zeno Clash. I would appreciate you read this if you are about to download this file.

Zeno Clash is an independently funded game by a very small and sacrificed group of people. The only way in which we can continue making games like this (or a sequel) is to have good sales.

I am aware that at this moment there is still no demo of the game, but we are working on one which will be available soon.

We cannot do anything to stop piracy of the game (and honestly don't intend to do so) but if you are downloading because you wish to try before you buy, I would ask that you purchase the game (and support the independent game development scene) if you enjoy it. We plan on updating Zeno Clash with DLC and continuing support for the game long after it's release.

Thanks for taking the time to read this... hopefully it will make a difference.

I apologize for saying the name of the torrent website. I didn't see the harm in it seeing as it's one of the biggest but, you are the boss smile.gif

I approve of your approach honestly. There really is nothing you can do unfortunately. Oh if there was a way to make it impossible for games that really need the sales and not make half the gaming world mad about whatever the solution is. One day maybe!

There was an article about fighting piracy called "10 ways to fight piracy":

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/v...to-Fight-Piracy

and "way 2" says

QUOTE
2. Make dev teams more public.

Gamers tend to connect with game developers. They admire John Carmack, Hideo Kojima, Sid Meier a lot more than (say) John Riccitiello or one of your forum mods. Developers are your karmic shield against the masses. Their faces should be out there from time to time to let gamers know, "If you pirate the game, this is who you're ripping off." One scrawny, unkempt game designer is worth a dozen slick marketing guys with a quiver full of buzzwords.

Some people are likely to think twice about stealing from a creative and talented developer. A giant corporation? Not so much.

You're actually doing this and judging from the comments in a torrent site i just checked, it has some effect. You also seem to do #4, #5 (this post), #6 (just see the comments in steam!), #8 and #9 (the post above). You probably still need to do #1 and #3. You can skip #10 its bullshift and its too late for #7 if happened (but i dont think so).

I think ACE Team either has done, or is currently doing all 10 of those.

About #1 (DRM) I think it depends on the DRM. I think of steam more in terms of a platform which gives me great tools for autoupdating, achievements, (free) DLC, etc...
And they even worry about distribution, download servers, handling credit cards, etc...

Believe with the moves you make, THERE is a lot of people who WILL buy the game.

One, you have the right price on it and not the impossible game to get without the grand-ma and grand-pa money.

Two, you don't give money to get THE number 1 safety piracy lock.
Believe me the PC gamers, just wants some attention and affection (lol)... tongue.gif
And not the stupid and bad opinion of some big studios, who started with the PCs, gets the attention and continue with the consoles, swearing on the PC gamers!

Three, give to the community (of the PC platform), games for fun and not some super extra special game with extra juice of nothing.

Four and foremost, the PC gamer HATES the multi-platform games who start the development on the consoles and after that on the PC (95 per cent of them are bad porting).

Five, do not expect to get money on the rush (yes, I know that everyone wants to get the money quickly), but classic games NEVER die and always give money in return (I will not put the names of them because of the copyrights thing, just for example, some of the games who use to the graphic engine too, lol).

So guys, I think you're in a VERY good way.
