Alright...I've played through this game a few times now and recently, I had an Idea when I was fighting those "statues" or "shadows". They are/were an advanced ancient civilization that has been all around Zenozoik, and therefor knew about the entire world and things OUTSIDE Halstedom(as opposed to its citizens). Golem is the last of them. And by "ending it all" he meant educating the citizens of Halstedom about the outside world. The Rubik's Cube is a sign of the fact that they were far ahead of their time, and so was the electricity at the end of the world.
How I got this Idea:
Golem has all that armor on his back, which was probably a regular outfit in that civilization and I recall seeing similar armor on those statues.

Devs, please tell me that I am on to something here, or that I am at least HALF right.
Postscript:Tell my why Golem is a voodoo doll tongue.gif

All I can say is: Interesting theory and you sort of have some concepts right...

You'll have to wait to know the REAL answer...

I remember during the boat rider scene Golem mentioned that several of the statue-people were 'Not dead. Broken.' As in they were something that was not alive and no longer functions. So they may not be living beings at all, but some kind of construct. Golem's own name comes from a mythical creature that moves like a man but is not truly alive, so it could be a reference to the fact that the people who put Golem where he is had the ability to create living constructs.

I am greatly interested in the significance of the rubiks cube - the one artifact in Zeno Clash that appears to be something from our world. It may symbolize Golem's knowledge of things beyond what the other characters in Zenozoik know.

I think the statues were there to keep Golem asleep, and to keep people out. Thats why when a candle is lit they do their best to blow it out again and again. When he finally awoke, they all disappeared because there was nothing else they could do. Idk why some didn't disappear during the boat ride. My question is why the wand was so easy for Ghat to obtain and use. If someone was trying to keep him there, why leave the wand out?

lol, old civilization destroying itself from war leaving Zenozoik as it is today, and Golem being the last archive of knowledge of the old civilzation. lol, obeying his creator's ideals, rather then what in reality they practiced, which was a self-destructive war. lol, commentary on human nature.

Golem also has a strong dislike for the Corwids, which may hint at the ideals Golem, one of them being pursuit of knowledge and thought.

lol once more at the Corwids representing man's habitual nature, and going about daily lives out of habit rather than thought, and the Corwids representing the extreme of absence of thought. It's just what they do, Ghat indicates.

and lol at all of what I've said being reactionary, wild speculation and not particularly well thought out.

Maybe his origin can be linked to the old Greek tragedies/comedies: in those stories, there always was a certain balance between Apollo and the Apollonian 'thoughts', meaning order and civilization, with Bacchus on the other side representing nature, chaos and disorder. When the balance was disrupted, a variety of situations could happen, depending on the way the balance was struck. If Golem can be identified with the Apollonian thought, then the fact that he was imprisoned means chaos was able to rule the world. Then again, the Greek stories were the base for almost every modern or less modern story, so it could just be wild guessing tongue.gif.

*** WARNING: Lots of spoilers - Don't read if you haven't finished the game! ***

Alright... I just finished the game (for the first time). And naturally, I have a lot of questions about things, including Golem. So, here's what we know:

1. When Golem is hurt, the following people are also hurt: Ghat, Deadra, Father-Mother.

2. This means Golem has some important connection to Ghat, Deadra and Father-Mother.

But what??? After the first 'shared pain' incident (Hunter fight), I wondered whether, maybe, Ghat and Deadra were *real* brother and sister and Golem was their father. But this theory is basically ruined by F-M being part of the equation. Hmm, anyway...

3. In the final cutscene, we see a black-skinned figure who looks very similar to Golem. This figure also has a Rubik's Cube and is watching something through a telescope.

Okay, so who is this character? Could it be Golem himself, stripped down to a g-string and returned to his native environment (The End of the World)? Hmm... I don't think so. I think Golem is what his name suggests. He is just a construct, controlled by the mysterious character seen in this final cutscene. This character has placed Golem on the 'Throne' specifically so he can be discovered by Ghat, who will then go with him back to Halstedom. So why does this character want this to happen? Ah... Currently I have no idea laugh.gif

As for the Rubik's cube... It is an odd item. It's not just an item from a different culture or tech level - It's specifically an item from Earth. But I don't think too much should be read into this. Edmundo said in a different thread that he wanted to put something 'plastic' and 'alien' in there, and that this worked perfectly.

Of course, when Golem completes the puzzle at the end, it's symbolic. F-M's secret has finally been revealed (i.e. That particular puzzle is solved) but also Golem appears to have achieved his aim (which seems to involve meeting up with Ghat, Deadra and F-M and getting into Halstedom). I don't think the Rubik's cube holds any power itself - It's just a symbol. [ Though, if you like, you could imagine that every time Golem rotates his Rubik's cube, the 'dark master's' duplicate cube might rotate as well. Therefore, it could be a communication device - When the cube is solved, it's a message to the master - "Mission accomplished." ]

Anyway, that's enough for now. If anyone else has theories, or even some facts (*hint* *hint* ACE Team!), I'd love to hear them smile.gif Now I'm going to get some sleep, and will probably be dreaming about Zeno Clash all night rolleyes.gif

The hurting thing does not necessarily mean a connection between these characters. Notice how Golem actually touches FM in the last level.

If Edmundo wants to explain more... he has to step in this thread. He's the story writer, and I might be seriously injured if I give away sensible information. tongue.gif

And look at F-M's reaction! biggrin.gif Okay, well, if there's not actually a connection between these characters then... I'm even more confused than before! wink.gif

Well, I don't want to get you injured. And I'm not even sure if I want answers. It's often better to leave things to the audience's imagination. But if Edmundo wants to drop a few *hints*...? wink.gif

Yes, I also think it's good to leave some things to the audience's imagination, this topic and all the imaginative/meaningful explanations are proof of that! In that sense, all the explanations here are as correct as my own.
But, I don't think there is much harm in revealing which explanations are compatible with what I have thought for a second chapter of Zeno Clash...

"They are/were an advanced ancient civilization that has been all around Zenozoik, and therefor knew about the entire world and things OUTSIDE Halstedom(as opposed to its citizens). ... by "ending it all" he meant educating the citizens of Halstedom about the outside world. The Golem has the power to choose what people are "bound" to him, it is true he has been near Deadra, Ghat and that he touches Father-Mother in the final level. It might be a way he has to control things... While people in the story were tied by natural bonds (family or affection) Golem brings new artificial bonds: his power, or (and here I am hinting stuff about a next chapter) "ideals" which also have binding power among those who share them... and I better stop here before Carlos attacks me for revealing too much tongue.gif

Thanks Edmundo! biggrin.gif I didn't even consider that the act of Golem touching Father-Mother might give him some kind of control over him/her!

Yeah Carlos hinted at that. If Golem plans on uniting everyone then there would be no more violence within the family amirite? Isn't that dangerous? Like if a Corwid caught someone, or if someone in the family took advantage of it? Maybe thats why the ancients put Golem back to sleep, because it was too dangerous to have everyone connected in that way. The temple Golem is found in is decorated with golden statues of his likeness though. He could have been worshiped too. Demons and God(s) can gain power from prayers ( Demons can gain power from idols such as the golden calf or just by being worshiped) and perhaps he became too powerful or something. Maybe Golem and the giant thing want the power back. Oh and the big statue could be imprisoned somewhere and all he can do is watch and tell Golem what to do.

Golem said that he would show everyone where their family is, but is he really that nice? Does he expect something in return?

EDIT* Golem is the only one able to hurt others through himself.

My guess is that Golem is some kind of demi-god: half human, and half god, the one we see in the end credits. Maybe his line "No Ghat, there isn't anything left there." was a lie and his father-god has a place there. Or his home could be high above the shadow realm, which is how he can see what happens in Halstedom.

As for the voodoo-powers, that's probably by being something god-y. Maybe he can turn invisible too, we never knew exactly how he snuck up on the Hunter. Superhuman strength is a given too. How else could he pull open a massive stone gate and mash the Hunter's skull to a pulp? (I mean, damn. That was his brain making that noise.)

As for helping the Family, he did say he obeyed to ideals, and he might consider helping them as his duty.

Golem is the most unique character, in my limited perspective. Undeniably the most pivotal character in the game's story, he is different than every other being within Zenozoik.

I'll use bits of my poor memory on his dialogue to inquire certain points and address what is posted above.

I love what is told here of the shared injury Golem creates, how when he is slashed by the Hunter both Ghat and the girl person [who I hate as a character] share the blow. I think it is entirely rational that his meaning of 'linking them in a way they couldn't imagine' meant that he would bind them all together in the way he, Ghat, the girl, and Father Mother are bound at the end. This would partially explain his contempt for the Corwid of the Free, as placing them in the threshold of such a bond would be impossible due to their lack of logical thinking and care for reality. They would be capable of ruining the bond. A further testiment to this is the Rubix Cube. When you think about how the Rubix Cube functions, when one side is turned, the other sides react. When you alter it through one algorithm [sequence of turns] the rest of the cube is shaken and altered. The Rubix Cube is symbolic of the society Golem is striving to create, one where everyone is 'connected in a bond deeper' than what they previously felt. Using the symbolism of the Rubix Cube, he means to bind them as a society into one whole. But the Rubix Cube does not function in the way where turning one side turns EVERY side. Hence, the society will surely not be a perfect whole, but connected deeply with individual groups tied directly together. The game hints at this as well when Golem says, "This is a problem." This line is said when Father Mother is almost killed, and expresses his concern to the link he is building within the family being broken. It is also perhaps an allusion to his worries that the internal strife between Ghat and Father Mother [Son and Father?] will prevail and hurt the 'link'. All speculation and ranting, but all the same, perhaps there is something valuable to be found within my ramblings.

Eh, I'll not continue with my inane conclusions and arguments. They're all likely wrong in any case.

--------------------
Zeno Clash is remarkable. ...remarkable is an odd word. 'Remark' 'able'. We take it to mean 'great' or 'fabulous', but all the word means is that the noun it describes can be remarked upon. What is those are BAD remarks? ... Sometimes I have trouble sleeping at night.

Golem stayed near the house cause he knew Hunter was at the beach and he didn't want to fight. Hunter didn't expect Golem or even hear him possibly because he was enjoying Ghat too much.
